Sowing Innovation: Demonstration Showcases Grass Mixtures to Boost Organic Pastures in Bulgaria

On April 20, 2026, organic farming took centre stage at The Wild Farm, where farmers and specialists gathered to test new grass mixtures to improve pastures.

Field Trial of Direct Seeding Grass Mixtures: Improving Forage Quality for Organic Meadows and Pastures

On April 20, 2026, a demonstration of grass mixture sowing for pasture improvement was held at The Wild Farm in Southeastern Bulgaria. This successful event, which brought together farmers, advisers, and other specialists, was organised by the BIOSELENA Foundation for Organic Agriculture.

The Importance of Direct Seeding Methods

Two specialised grass seed mixtures, curated for the region's specific soil and climate, were sown across 10 decares using direct seeding (no-till) technology. This modern approach differs significantly from traditional methods: seeds are planted using a specialised drill that bypasses the need for preliminary tillage, such as ploughing, disc harrowing, or rolling.

By eliminating traditional soil disturbance, farmers can:

  • Prevent soil erosion and minimise compaction from heavy machinery.
  • Maintain permanent grassland status, ensuring compliance with bans on ploughing protected areas.
  • Enhance forage quality: The balance of species is crucial for high-yield, long-term usability. Both mixtures used in this trial consist of seven components—five grass species and two legumes—designed for mixed-use grazing and hay production.

Discussion and Networking Opportunities

The trial brought together 24 participants, including 11 organic farmers, eight advisors from the National Agricultural Advisory Service, four specialists from BIOSELENA, and representatives from a certification body.
The group discussed the challenges and advantages of various sowing methods for high-quality roughage. Following the field demonstration, host farmer Nikolay Vasiliev showcased his own natural restoration techniques, which involve levelling the ground and allowing pastures to "rest" after grazing rather than using purchased seeds.
The visit concluded at the farm's meat processing facility—the first and only certified organic slaughterhouse in Bulgaria. The hosts shared insights into producing and marketing their own brand of organic beef and veal products.
